Abba’s Rest AGM

The AGM of the trustees will be by Zoom this year, on Monday July 27th, at 11:00 am. Any supporters who would like to attend should use our contact form to let us know in advance. We shall then email you the log-in details, along with an agenda and annual accounts. You will be able to see and hear and speak to the trustees, hearing the latest news and being able to contribute as you wish. For security purposes, attenders will initially, and briefly, be placed on hold before joining the meeting.
The inadvisability of meeting in person in these difficult times means that we shall not be able to offer you the coffee and cake we intended, but the advantage is that (we hope) more supporters will be able to ‘tune in’ to our activities and our hopes for the future.

Blankets for warmth

On June 19th, our Chiringa team told us that  most of our elders complained of feeling cold since we are in the cold months, and told as that the blankets which they received long time back are worn out. therefore, we at once approved that purchase, and manager George and his team distributed blankets and sleeping mats.

Covid Precautions

On May 29th, the Chiringa team asked for funds for sanitizers, plastic washing buckets and soap, as the Government, unable to manage on its own, was urging all organizations to take part in assisting the community. Of course, we approved, and each of the 60 beneficiaries received a plastic washing bucket and three cartons of soap.

Water project training

The Michesi Water Committee recently (end-March) participated in extra training, organised by Ronald Tsonga, and funded jointly by the Rotary Club of Ayr and Abbas Rest. With the coronavirus being in all the neighbouring countries, some practice at protection was included.

Power problems

Power is always a problem in Malawi – there has been no electricity in Chiringa for five days now, as the electricity poles fell due to the heavy rains there!

Good idea delayed

We had expected to launch a gifts page (a recent idea from a supporter), using online shopping. However, Paypal have listed us as based in Algeria (we’re not the only ones relocated to there!) and, once set, the country can’t be changed, so we need to close the account (to restart it), and we can’t do that either (again, others have had this problem) – so our Gifts page – all ready to go – will not be available for Christmas. We’ll let you know when the problems are sorted.

Fertiliser arrival

Here we have the fertiliser arriving in early October – Care & Share buys fertiliser and seeds for distribution to the support groups and the vulnerable families that are keeping the orphans as part of empowering them in farming activities rather than waiting for handouts. Since we introduced this method most families are able to harvest maize which supports them throughout the year.

Coffee morning result

The St John’s Town of Dalry Coffee Morning was a great success – raising the tremendous amount of over ¬£1,000. Many thanks to all those who helped and all those who attended. Supporting Abbas Rest in Scotland enables Care & Share in Malawi to continue their regular assistance to many sections of their community at Chiringa, and to develop new initiatives as the needs arise.

August – new gate & ICT visit

We’ve known for a long time that the gate of the centre at Chiringa needed replacement, so we have funded a new gate. The photos below show the old gate, the new gate, and the adjoining wall where three young people were trained in brickwork as an important component of the gate installation. The fourth photo shows the Minister of ICT, Hon Mark Botomani, MP, visiting the Tele-center as part of the promotion of universal ICT access – our manager Forster asked the Minister for support for children in our care, and was granted ten training places at the Tele-center.
